The City of Phoenix named HomeBase Youth Services the 2007 Homeless Service Provider of the Year for outreaching to homeless youth and addressing their immediate, basic needs and providing transitional living support.
Mayor Phil Gordon, joined by Phoenix City Councilman Greg Stanton and the Phoenix City Council, presented HomeBase Youth Services with the award on Tues., Apr. 10 at the City Council “On the Road” Policy Session. The public meeting was held at the newly named Adam Diaz Senior Center in Phoenix.
The award presentation was part of the city’s annual recognition of the value and accomplishments of the Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG).
“The awardees are individuals or agencies that have used CDBG funds in an exemplary manner and made significant contribution to community development in Phoenix,” said Jerome E. Miller, City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Director. “The City of Phoenix is proud to recognize HomeBase Youth Services with the Homeless Service Provider of the Year Award for its advocacy and serving as a safety net for the thousands of homeless youth in the valley.”
As an “On the Road” Policy Session, the council meeting was open to the public and organizations were able to bring clients, volunteers, board members, and staff to the meeting. Nearly 50 HomeBase staff, board members, and youth attended the award presentation.
As HomeBase Youth Services was announced as the recipient of Homeless Service Provider of the Year, the emcee acknowledged the youth from HomeBase who were in the audience. Councilman Greg Stanton, a devoted advocate for the issue of homelessness, invited all of the youth to the staging area to participate in accepting the award and have their picture taken with the mayor.
“The support of the City of Phoenix and members of the community is fundamental to our efforts to give at-risk and homeless youth the tools they need to break the cycle of homelessness before it becomes their fate,” said HomeBase Youth Services President and CEO Mary Kate Poling. “This recognition of HomeBase’s effective programs and services is a testament to the commitment that we receive from partners like the City of Phoenix and each resident who invests in these programs.”
The City of Phoenix presented a total of nine awards as part of its Community Development Week Celebration.
